In the first of a 50 post series, we’re going to review the Top-50 drivers as they finished in the final 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series points, and highlight their efforts for 2008 as we move to the Sprint Cup series.

Without further ado, we start with our 50th place driver, Regan Smith.

2007 saw Regan Smith under the tutaledge of Mark Martin, and running a total of only 7 Cup races. This safely kept him in line to compete for the 2008 Raybestos Rookie of the Year.

In 2007 Regan Smith was also part of the Ginn Fiasco, that saw Boby Ginn essentially calling it quits and selling his teams off to DEI. While Smith’s future was in limbo for a short while, he has come through the wash and most likely in a better position than had Ginn not sold out. With the closing of Ginn Racing, and the subsequent purchase by DEI, Regan Smith will now be in his own ride full-time in 2008. His mentor, Mark Martin, will not be far away as he splits the now vacated #8 ride with rookie Aric Almirola.

Ken Schrader

Ken Schrader, 2007

  • 2007 Stats

    • Organization: Wood Brothers/JTG
    • Car Number: 21
    • Crew Chief: Michael McSwain
    • Sponsor: Little Debbie
    • Points: 49th :: 932 :: -5791
    • Starts: 13
    • Poles: 0
    • Wins: 0
    • Top 5’s: 0
    • Top 10’s: 0
    • Winnings: $1,519,350
  • 2008 Preview

    • Organization: Wood Brothers/JTG?
    • Car Number: 21?
    • Crew Chief: Gene Nead?
    • Sponsor: Little Debbies?

The 2007 season is probably one that Ken Schrader would like to forget about, in terms of Nextel Cup competition anyway.

The situation came to a head early last summer. As the #21 fell out of the coveted Top-35 in Owners Points, and Bill Elliott was brought in to secure a place in the field. With the #21 finishing one spot short in 36th for the Owners Points, it is unclear whether Bill Elliott or Ken Schrader will start out in the car. Throw in the fact that the Past Champions provisional for Elliott is out of the mix, as he will have Dale Jarrett and Kurt Busch in line ahead of him, and what is going to happen with the #21 is all in the air at this point.

The only thing clear at this point is that if Ken Schrader does indeed continue to pilot the #21, he will share 12 races with rookie Marcos Ambrose.

John Andretti

  • 2008 Preview

    • Organization: BAM Racing
    • Car Number: 49
    • Crew Chief: Dean Johnson
    • Sponsor: TBD, Various

John Andretti signed on to run the remainder of 2007 before Michigan in August, and signed on for 2008 last November.

With the trends of late, it is impossible to foresee how long Andretti will be in the car since the #49 struggled to make races in 2007. This trend of multiple drivers and sponsors may likely continue in 2008 as single car teams wage war with the big multi-car team powerhouses.

Ward Burton

Ward Burton, 2007

  • 2007 Stats

    • Organization: Morgan-McClure
    • Car Number: 4
    • Crew Chief: Chris Carrier
    • Sponsor: State Water Heaters
    • Points: 47th :: 939 :: -5784
    • Starts: 16
    • Poles: 0
    • Wins: 0
    • Top 5’s: 0
    • Top 10’s: 0
    • Winnings: $1,284,970
  • 2008 Preview

    • Organization: Morgan-McClure?
    • Car Number: 4?
    • Crew Chief: TBD
    • Sponsor: State Water Heaters

Finally someone pulled their head out and hired Ward Burton, much to the cheers of his fans. However, as a single car team in a multi-car team sandbox Morgan-McClure struggled in 2007.

It is unknown whether or not Ward Burton will continue to pilot the #4, which saw Todd “Mr. Clean” Bodine gave it a shot at Homestead and fail to make the show.

While Ward is deserving for 2008, if the track doesn’t pan out may your continued endeavors in wildlife conservation see continued success.
