Ah… dem was da days!
The only massaging a stock car body received (aero what!?) was when in very close contact with a competitor or when rim riding, ala Richard Petty as he led the way at Darlington collecting the infamous “Stripe” along the way. As The King said at the time, “We drove for the sheer fun of driving because there wasn’t that much money to be made.”
It was a time of short-sleeve driving attire, 8 inch wide Firestones and the Pure Oil Company being the official supplier of fuel. Did I mention all the Victory Lane kisses given by the Winston Girls or “Winkie Louise”, representing Pure Oil Co. as Miss Firebird?
If any of that sounds familiar, or you have a desire to see some of NASCAR’s past legends live and in action on track 2008 may just be the year for it.
The Old School Racing Champions Tour (OSRCT) has announced a 10 race schedule starting May 18, 2008 at Concord Motor Speedway.
Racing legends David Pearson, Dave Marcis, Harry Gant, James Hylton, Geoff Bodine have all signed to compete. On the probable list are NASCAR stars Jack Ingram, Derrike Cope, Phil Parsons, Robert Pressley, Dave Marcis, Joe Ruttman, Chuck Bown, Randy LaJoie, Carl Long and Ronnie Silver.
From the ranks of ARCA comes Bill Venturini, Bob Schacht and the new owner of The Rock Andy Hillenburg.
The OSRCT will debut at the Concord Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina with a 10 race schedule. A champion will be crowned at the New Smyrna Speedway in February of 2009 during a Last Chance and Championship Race.
With an eye towards safety all events will be held on tracks of less the ¾ of a mile in length to keep speeds down and allow for greater fender-to-fender action. And you can bet with the dirt track at Eldora, the high bank quarter mile at Flat Rock Mi, in addition to South Boston in Virginia the schedule provides just that.
This PDF file provides the full run down on the cars, stars and venues as currently planned.
This series has me so intrigued it’s almost worth looking into a trip back stateside to catch a couple events. For those of you not stuck out in the middle of the Pacific like I am, and hold a interest in NASCAR’s past history, shouldn’t miss this opportunity to catch at least one of the 12 events.

[thumb:385:l:s=1:l=x]Well usually I give you a rundown of the years biggest headlines but this week need to give a few shout outs. First off all those getting pounded by snow in Denver I’ll see you guys in the spring as I am in Virginia now for a few months. Next staying in a barracks where Sprint runs the phones way to go took them only a month to fix my line. I will be trying to get an Interview with a legendary driver to be announced once I get permission for 20 questions so anyone in Danville see you soon hopefully. Now to the year Pontiac got its first win.

Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX (December 31st, 2006) – Local racing attraction at Texas Motor Speedway expands online efforts to improve fan experience.
Thunder Lounge has been a staple of entertainment in the Texas Motor Speedway infield for years. Having been featured in many articles, including from the Star Telegram, fans of Thunder Lounge have been left with waiting between events to continue their experience.
Thunder Lounge revamped their website last May, http://thunderlounge.com, to begin to bring a continuation of that experience once fans depart from the track. Since the relaunch in May of 2006, their website is fast becoming a staple for fans to get an alternative opinion on today’s NASCAR topics.
“One of the neatest things about Thunder Lounge at the track is that it is purely one giant Mardi Gras style partyâ€, says Luke Poland, the online content manager and one of the network administrators for Thunder Lounge. “The experience is something that can not be provided elsewhere, and sticks in the minds of fans once leaving the track.â€
With that in mind Thunder Lounge will continue to expand in 2007 by forging an online peer to peer interactive sports community through the offering of free blogs which will run the infamous WordPress blogging software (http://wordpress.org).
“In an effort to keep the spirit of Thunder Lounge alive and well, we have devoted a lot of resources and time to bring that same spirit to our online activities as well. Offering NASCAR fans, racing fans, and sports fans in general the opportunity to tell their stories and voice their opinion will further enable us to give our fans the opportunity to interact away from the track, and give them the ability to keep the party going,†continued Luke.
The Thunder Lounge Network is a new online service founded by a group of passionate NASCAR fans. Members of the Thunder Lounge team have created and managed some other large communities on the Internet over the last eight years, with some of their team having been involved in writing and producing open-source software for the better part of the decade. With the collective experience and knowledge acquired running these sites, they set out to develop a next-generation Internet community and social networking service for racing and sports fans all over the world.
While Thunder Lounge is NASCAR at its roots and in its heart, that doesn’t mean only NASCAR fans should register and use the site. With users getting their own domain name ( UserName.thunderlounge.com ), almost anyone can theme their site to fit their agenda. Thunder Lounge is open to anyone wishing to blog, provided they are blogging responsibly. With the use of currently available technology, Thunder Lounge also provides their bloggers advanced protection from spammers. In addition, the Thunder Lounge Network is monitored for any bad neighbors who may be using the service with malicious intent (sploggers, etc).
Thunder Lounge can be reached on the World Wide Web at http://thunderlounge.com to learn more, or at http://thunderlounge.com/blogs/ for direct blog information.
