[thumb:364:l:s=1:l=x] Another year has closed out and the questions and concerns have been flying about if the chase is fair and should there be a different format. Complaints start with the usual that we are afraid to race the Chase contenders in the final ten races and should the points of the Chase contenders be kept separate. A new and improved Chase that would make it a shoot out until the end and a season to remember is what we all are looking for.

To start with my new and improved format the Chase has to be opened up a little more. We are going to be taking the top 18 cars with ten races left in the season. Sounds pretty much the same up to this point, but here comes the major change.

The Chase contenders will not be running with the regular scheduled program. Two weeks before the contenders are decide a list of 10 different tracks will be put out for the chase. None of these tracks are normal tracks on the Cup schedule. There are more than enough tracks to support this evolution. I’m talking about running the regular tracks that run every weekend. Think about it, who wouldn’t pay to see the top 18 cars run at South Boston, Nashville and Road Atlanta just to name a few of the tracks that could be used.

Not only would they run the different tracks, but there are a couple extra things too. No team is allowed to practice at any of the tracks in any way. On Saturday afternoon there would be a four hour practice session, an hour break and then they qualify. After qualifications are over the cars are impounded over night. On Sunday morning they will have three hours to work on cars, but major changes such as motors, transmissions and rear ends would require them to start at the back.

Thirty minutes prior to the race commencing some would draw a pill to decide how the field would line up the race, invert six, eight, ten or the entire field would be the options. Points would also be given to the fastest qualifier.

Basically it would let the Chase contenders’ race for the championship and make it more of a shoot out format. It would allow the non-Chase contenders race with out the fear of wrecking one of the Chase contenders. The addition of the ten new tracks opens the exposure of NASCAR more. It would also give NASCAR the ability to look at new tracks to add to the regular schedule for the up coming season.

If only they would put a Redneck in Charge!! And That’s the Way I See It.
