[thumb:374:l:s=1:l=x]This article should tick you off when you read it. It sure did me, hence the name of the article here. The article is from Nascar.com, and an interview with Roush Racing’s Geoff Smith. Apparently, derived from the article, he and his drivers have been victimized unjustly and have never done anything wrong. He also seems to have forgotten what sport the company, that he is president of, competes in. How convenient.
Geoff feels that drivers have become complacent, and that on-track battles are getting out of hand. He cries his story of how Biffle and Kenseth have been victimized this year by aggressive driving. The writer of the article, Chris Jenkins of the AP, also has spun Gordon’s comments on the issue out of context. I guess that’s just natural for AP writers to do. Read it and see if you can pick it up as well. The media needs a rivalry to write about, and Jenkins here is definitely trying his hardest to help fan the flames. When these die out, they will find a new flame to fan, and try again. The cycle repeats until there is actually a true rivalry to write home about.
So my question is, why doesn’t Geoff see Kenseth’s actions at Bristol as aggressive driving? Nor does he mention any other Roushketeer as an aggressor. Interesting. The more I read, the more I wanted to ask if he wanted some cheese with his “whine”. It’s sad, really. From the tone of his comments it sounds like he’d prefer Nascar to be a non-contact sport, one where contact is frowned upon. Similar to the series where a certain new Ganassi driver hails from, and even said he was happy to be leaving behind.
Considering one of the drivers whose gear resides in my stash is a Roushketeer, I’d say this is fueling my distaste of Geoff’s comments even further. His comments have “Politically Correct” written all over them for the most part, and it’s sad to see. Finally, his parting comment had a little sack in it. Someone, whether it’s Nascar or Matt, will handle it eventually. Doesn’t make up for the whining, but at least he didn’t completely go out as a wuss. However, there still remains the “we’re the victims” tone.
You know the wise Confucius once said, man who lives in glass house should not throw stones. Geoff normally has a great perspective. Sometimes different, but rarely with a “poor me” tone. Guess they caught him in a bad mood or something.
In light of all this, at least Jim Hunter and Jeff Burton’s comments made sense. Both say it was just hard racing, that ended up bad. Jeff’s fault, but not intentionally. Jenkins would have you believe otherwise with his initial writings in the article, as mentioned previously.
In the end, let ‘em race.
