Top News stories of 1948:

World news Mahatma Gandhi is assassinated and the Berlin Wall is built. In the Science world Cortisone is introduced for treatment of arthritis and Orville Wright Dies. Sports world Cleveland wins the World Series and Babe Ruth Dies. In the Entertainment Hamlet wins Best Pictures and Howdy Doody is the top TV show. Everyday life is changed with the invention of Velcro. For some fun facts Popcorn is sold in a mass scale and the board game Scrabble is introduced. Now to the real part of the article. Time to go back to the days of Fords and Hudson Hornets battling on the tracks of the east.

February 15:

Red Byron wins the first race of the season at the Daytona Beach Road course.

February 21:

NASCAR is incorporated.

February 24:

Despite a broken steering wheel and driving by the spokes Fonty Flock wins race in Jacksonville, FL.

May 23:

NASCAR holds three events in different cities the winners are: Gober Sosebee in Macon, GA, Bill Blair in Danville, VA, and Johnny Rogers in Dover, NJ.

May 30:

Paul Pappy outruns 19 year old Fireball Roberts to win at Jacksonville, FL.

June 20:

NASCAR makes its debut in the great state of Alabama with Fonty Flock winning the race in Birmingham.

July 25:

Slick Davis is the first driver to pass away due to injuries sustained is a race this happened in Greensboro, NC.

August 15:

Buck Barr finishes 2nd place 18 laps behind Al Keller who wins the race.

August 20:

NASCAR cancels a number of events in North Carolina due to a polio outbreak.

September 5:

Curtis Turner sweeps a double header at North Wilkesboro.

November 14:

Red Byron wins the last race of the season in Jacksonville, FL, and wins the Championship by 32.75 points over Fonty Flock.

  1. oops goofed up the berlin wall wasn’t built in 1949. The Berlin blockade and Berlin airlift happened in 1949. Luke should have helped out there he was there.
