In other sports, the NY Giants win the World series (4-0) over the Cleveland Indians and Ohio State and UCLA split the National Championship. In entertainment
news, Big year for books as Lord of the Flies and Lord of the Rings are introduced. In science, The USS Nautilus is commisioned as the first nuclear submarine. Famous deaths of the year: Lionel Barrymore and Henri Matesse. Now… time for the year that NASCAR Royal family takes the throne.
February 7:
Two-time Champ Herb Thomas wins the season opener at West Palm in his Hudson.
February 20:
A field of 136 cars start at a modified race at Daytona largest ever field to start a race.
February 21:
Tim Flock wins at Daytona but is disqualified for having a two-way radio in his car.
March 28:
Dick Rathman comes from last to first at Oakland Speedway in California.
May 13:
NASCAR President Bill France is escorted from Indy garage area.
June 13:
The first road course built for Grand National cars is used in New Jersey Al Keller wins in a Jaguar.
July ???:
Flame Proof coveralls are made available to NASCAR drivers.
July 24:
Bill France Jr. crashes at a short track event in Winston Salem, NC it was his second and last start in NASCAR.
September 12:
Hershel McGriff wins in Macon Tim Flock finishes second in his first race back from quitting the tour from Daytona DQ.
October 10:
Buck Baker wins at the new track in Memphis-Arkansas it is the first 1.5 mile oval.
October 24:
Lee Petty finishes last but clinches the title at North Wilkesboro, NC
