In national news, Autherine Lucy first black student at the University of Alabama is suspended because of riots and US tests first aerial Hydrogen Bomb. In other sports, NY Yankees win the World Series and Oklahoma repeats as National Champions. In entertainment, Elvis is deamed the worlds first rock star and The Wizard of Oz is first shown on TV. In Science, Felix Wankel Develops the Rotary Internal Combustion Engine and DNA is first photographed. Famous deaths of the year: Tommy Dorsey, Connie Mack, and Jackson Pollock. Now… time for the year that Carl Kiekhaefer becomes the original “Cat in the Hat”.
November 13, 1955:
Tim Flock wins opener at Hickory, Ford’s head of development Buddy Shuman dies in a hotel fire.
December 11, 1955:
Herb Thomas wins at West Palm Beach as the top two drivers are disqualified.
February 26:
Tim Flock wins at Daytona Beach outlasting 76 drivers side note Charlie Scott finishes 19th he is the first African-American to run in a NASCAR Grand National race.
April 8:
Tim Flock wins his third race fo the season then quites Kiekhaefer team Buck Baker replaces him.
May 6:
Speedy Thompson wins a fourth race in a row for Kiekhaefer Racing.
June 3:
Kiekhaefer Racing scores 16th win in a row when Herb Thomas wins in Merced, CA.
June 10:
Ralph Moody wins at West Memphis as Clint McHugh and Cotton Priddy die in seperate accidents.
July 4:
Fireball Roberts wins at Raleigh Speedway.
August 4:
Lee Petty Stops the race at Tulsa, OK for dusty conditions. Lee Stopped his car and climbed the grandstand and waved the red flag.
August 12:
Tim Flock wins in NASCAR’s debut in Wisconsin.
September 30:
Curtis Turner wins a Convertable race at Hillsboro, NC when an accident takes out all the other cars.
October 23:
Herb Thomas is gravely injured as teammate Buck Baker wins at Shelby, NC.
November 18:
Buck Baker wins at Wilson, NC and clinches the title.
