- Notes: Retired at the end of 2007
While the driver he replaced went to help a friend, so did Ricky Rudd in returning to Robert Yates Racing. As the veteran mentor to rookie David Gilliland, his primary role was to help evaluate and improve the slowly sinking Robert Yates Racing.
Last August Ricky announced he would be calling it quits at the end of the season. As the dominos fell, a web of controversy soon was weaved througout the fall.
First talks were ongoing about Kenny Wallace succeeding Ricky Rudd for 2008. That went south when Robert Yates announced his was also retiring at the end of 2007, and that Doug would lead the way.
Doug quickly sold out and worked a deal to get pretty much everything from Roush, essentially making the new Yates Racing a second shop for Roush.
Roush needed a place for Travis Kvapil, and into the #88 he slid (sponsor still in the air, but we’d bet that Roush Fenway is working it).
Also coming to light is where Roush will move his 5th team that must come out from under his banner in 2009. If you’re wondering where, you’re not paying attention.
