David GillilandRicky Rudd Robert Yates has to be ecstatic. Not that this is a sign of a comeback for RYR, mind you, but when both of your cars are sitting on the front row for the Daytona 500 and your “rookie” is on the inside, you’ve got a big reason to smile.

Naturally you knew what the deal was when you read the title of this bit. Indeed David Gilliland is going to be leading the field to the green a week from today in the Daytona 500. Grabbing his back is his teammate, one Mr. Ricky Rudd, and each of these gentlemen will be leading a field to the green come Thursday in the Duel 150’s (Or twin 125’s, or whatever you want to call them nowadays.)

So while there’s going to be some schmucks tauting the “I told you RYR would come back” lines this week, we’re not one of them. Granted it is quite an accomplishment and a prestigious one at that, but it is far from the cry of RYR’s return to top tier competitiveness. We’ll see as the season comes on, but were not ready to toot that horn yet. They don’t need the extra pressure of living up to the hype yet. Give em through March, maybe April, and then start making the annotations. By then, there will be plenty to write about if it’s certainly true.
