NASCAR handed out, or handed back if you prefer, points a plenty this afternoon.
In an unprecedented move, NASCAR not only swiped the recent standard of 100 driver/owner points, 6 week vacation and $100,000 fine for the crew chief (Bob Osbourne) for the #99 Office Depot team, but they also took back the 10 bonus points Carl Edwards had obtained for the seeding of the Chase.
Roush Fenway Racing President Geoff Smith commented from Vail, Colorado that RFR would be getting their ducks in a row over the next week to decide whether or not to appeal the penalty.
Going in their favor are the recent reversals for similar infractions in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, however this case was a little different in that the cover in question, which seals the oil tank box, was completely missing in post race inspection.
I can’t imagine they could be so unwise as to try to pull a fast one, where they tried to loosen it up (but backfired), especially with the recent slaying of teams in the NNS.
However, while Carl and Jack Roush are a little lighter in the points department, Robby Gordon is a little heavier on the points scale this week.
After receiving the standard penalties for having the wrong nose on his car in initial inspection at Daytona, the National Stock Car Commission over turned his penalty, with the exception of the monetary fine to Crew Chief Frank Kerr, which was raised from $100,000 to a whopping $150,000. Hey Beam! You really support Robby? Stroke the check.
Robby Gordon now sits in 21st place in points, while Edwards is now 7th.

And the over/under bet on the #7 being back out of the top 35 is… 5 events.
Actually, I’m finding it surprising right now Marc.
Heading into Atlanta, there was only 81 points between 21st and 36th.
There’s a lot of room for positioning still, both up and down.
As a comparison, only the top 7 spots are within the same amount behind the leader.
