[thumb:347:r:s=1:l=x]In a continuation of the signs that Richard Childress Racing is returning to greatness, and worthy to be one of (if not the) story of 2006, Jeff Burton held on for his third pole of the year at Indy. RCR’s turnaround from recent years of struggling is nothing short of stunning. Not from the fact that Richard got it turned around, of that there was no doubt, but the incredible difference between 2005 and 2006 is what makes this a Cinderella type story. The difference is remarkable.

Bouncing back from getting the shaft two weeks ago at Pocono, Clint Bowyer will sit on the outside pole and also go into the record books as the best qualifying position for a rookie. He kicks Casey Atwood from that honor, as he had qualified 3rd in his rookie effort.

Rounding out the top 5 were Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne, and Jimmie Johnson.

Also notable qualifying efforts were turned in by Robby Gordon (9th), Ken Schrader (11th), and Tony Raines (13th).

On the not so happy side of qualifying, Michael Waltrip failed to qualify for the second time this season. Prior to being bumped from the field, Michael made the remarks in an interview on TNT that if he were to be bumped from the field he would not attempt to gain another ride and slap NAPA on it like was the case at Charlotte.

However, it’s a double edged sword. MWR is not going unrepresented this weekend. Bill Elliot put in a solid effort in MWR’s #00 Chevy, qualifying in 26th spot on the grid.

Other notables failing to make the show were Paul Menard in the third DEI entry, and Kevin Lepage in BAM’s #49.

Kenny Wallace made the show, putting it in 28th spot, and Boris Said was the final driver to make it. Boris will start 43rd. While it may be a little disappointing to that team, after their recent success, there are 7 other drivers who would take starting last over not starting at all.
