[thumb:168:r:s=1:l=x]Yesterday Hendrick Motorsports finalized an extension with Jimmie Johnson, driver of the #48 Lowe’s Chevy for HMS, that will keep him with Hendrick through 2010. The teams primary sponsor, Lowe’s, has also agreed to stay through 2010 as well.
“Since I started in Nextel Cup racing, my association with Lowe’s and Hendrick Motorsports has been absolutely incredible,” Johnson said. “I couldn’t be more proud of this relationship and look forward to continuing what we’ve started with the No. 48 Lowe’s team.”
Lowe’s is also proud to sponsor Jimmie Johnson as well.
“We believe this is the best combination in racing,” said Robert Niblock, the chief executive of Lowe’s. “We are all proud to have someone like Jimmie carry the Lowes name in NASCAR.”
Since his debut at Daytona in 2002, where he happened to win the pole, and has accumulated 21 wins in 158 starts. Three of those wins have came this season, including the Daytona 500. Chad Knaus has been and incredible part of the success, and the driving force behind the team since he created it from the ground up in 2001 in preparation for Johnson’s rookie season in 2002. There was no information as to whether or not the crew chief who has been a part of Jimmie Johnson not finishing less than 5th in the final points standings since 2002, including 2nd twice, had or would be signed in conjunction with this round of extensions. Rumors sweeping the garage at the end of last season were that Knaus wanted out of his contract, but the team and Hendrick quickly put those rumors to bed.
This may just be business as usual for Hendrick, however in the face of a new manufacturer coming to town, it also only makes sense to make sure his stable is secure now and well into the future.
