While we can’t verify the accuracy of these leaks, they are interesting to say the least. It’s only logical that they surface around the first sanctioned events of 2007, namely Pre-Season Thunder, where so many people with something to say are surrounded by a massive wad of journalists who are ready to drink up any kool-aid offered.
So here we have rumors surfacing about the Chase, and the tweaks we’ve known were coming, in some shape or form, for the past several months.
According to ESPN (sorry, we aren’t linking to them in protest of their “Pay To Read Fiasco™” with their blogs), there will be a few minor tweaks to the Chase. They report what should at least calm some fears about NASCAR going overboard with the tweaks.
If you’re not in the Chase, you’re racing for 13th
What? You mean 11th right? Well, not anymore.
The race to be the top finisher outside of the Chase just got bumped back to 13th as, according to the article, NASCAR will now take the top 12 into the Chase. In addition, kiss the 400 point rule good bye as well. It appears it will be the top 12, and no more or no less.
OK, that isn’t too bad I guess. It’s roughly 28% (OK, 27.91%) of the field being eligible for the Chase (compared to 23.26% with 10, or more if the 400 point mark had its day in court). So 12 isn’t bad. An even dozen should do, and help appease a few sponsors at the same time.
More points for a win
According to NASCAR’s research and scenarios, giving additional points for a win could create a runaway scenario. Well, if they give the winner any more than 10 additional points that is. Anything more would detract from the overall goal of a NASCAR season, which is about being the most consistent over the long haul. So according to the article, expect an additional 10 for the win, and call it a day.
Move along, nothing to see here
What, you expected more changes? Sorry, Hoss. It doesn’t seem like there’s any more to it. 12 drivers, no 400 point margin, and 10 more points for a win. That’s all there is to it, minus those that are going to cry their poor little eyes out about how 12 drivers would have saved Jeff and Flip-Flop from skipping out on the dance in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Um, so? If they had made it in, they’d be crying about something else, so they’ll just have to get over it and move onto their next tear jerking topic.
Supposedly, we can expect an official announcement at the media day in Charlotte later this month. So until then, we’ll just have to wait.
