[thumb:166:l:s=1:l=x]RCR announced today during a special press conference at Talladega that Shell and its brand Pennzoil will be replacing GM Goodwrench as the primary sponsor on Kevin Harvick’s #29 RCR Chevrolet.

While GM is not leaving RCR, it will be returning in a smaller capacity next season as an associate sponsor on the #29.

Reese’s and Hershey will still be involved with the program in a similar fashion as this season.

Richard Childress commented on how times change, and how this is moving forward in life, in regards to an AP question on whether or not he saw this as breaking the final visible link between the #29 and the #3 of the past. Richard said that the #3 will live on, and this opportunity will be a platform for working towards the future.

Richard also commented on the sponsorship opportunity available in NASCAR, and that it’s stronger now than it has ever been.

Shell’s representative commented on the fact that the sponsorship is not viewed as a marketing cost, but an investment for their company to build their brand and recognition.

Off topic, Richard and Kevin both commented on the NASCAR decision to change the size of the restrictor plates this morning, and both supported the NASCAR stance of putting safety first. Kevin also remarked in his usual fashion that it’s cool to go really fast, until you hit something.

They also unveiled Kevin’s paint scheme for next season, which looks similar to the old #1 DEI used to run, although the biggest noticeable difference was that the top of the car and associated supports were white. The Shell and Pennzoil logo’s were on the hood, with Shell on the quarter panels.

It was a pretty sharp looking paint scheme, and as Kevin commented, this new sponsorship will give him the opportunity to step out from the shadow of the late Dale Earnhardt and begin to build his own separate identity.

In all this is obviously a big announcement for RCR and Shell, as they work towards building upon the foundation laid this season.

  1. Whatever the sponser, Kevin Harvick has been and will continue to visit the winners circle with RCR.The primary sponsorship of GM Goodwrench will be missed, almost to the extent of Dale Earnhardt himself.Harvick will definately be out from the shadow of Earnhardt/GM Goodwrench with this bright yellow paint scheme.

  2. Yeah, if his spotter can’t see it… then all hope is lost.

Although I am curious about the whole white roof thing. It just kind of looks a little funny I guess.

Maybe this was to keep it from looking too much like the #1 when it carried Pennzoil?
