[thumb:188:l:s=1:l=x]In a finish that will be talked about for years to come around the proverbial water coolers around the country and dinner tables across America, Tony Stewart’s bad luck string of having the best car and ending up beaten on fuel mileage changed for the better Sunday.

As other teams stopped for a splash of gas inside 10 laps to go to take the conservative route, Stewart stayed out and went for it. After all, what did they have to lose? The gamble paid off, and Stewart silently crept across the finish line with checkers flying after running out of gas coming down the back stretch. Coming up behind him was another gambler by the likes of Casey Mears. As the other more conservative teams made their stops for a splash, Mears also made the gamble. While the others in front of him stopped, it left Mears running second by a distant 17 seconds behind Stewart. Unfortunately for Mears, he too ran out of fuel shortly after Stewart did and was unable to coast by for the win. However 2nd wasn’t bad in his eyes at all, and he was all smiles on pit road after the race.

In other Chase news, Jeff Gordon seems to have taken his mulligan. After having a fuel pump fail late in the closing laps, he was left with a 39th place finish and sitting 6th in the points with a deficit of 120 points behind leader Jeff Burton.

Denny Hamlin climbed into second, 69 points back, while Mark Martin climbed up to third and just 70 points out of it.

Three down, and seven to go folks. With Talladega looming on the horizon this weekend, it’s far from over. The question that should be ringing in the back of every one’s mind right now is this, and I’ll leave it to you as the parting shot…

As consistent as Jeff Burton has been since last spring, will he even use his “mulligan”?
