[image:364:l:s=1:l=http://thunderlounge.com/articles/nascar/features/the-way-i-see-it/]Yep, you heard me, time to send them packing. It is a yearly debate whether or not NASCAR should do something about the so called Buschwhackers. It has come time for NASCAR to do something.

Back in the glory days the full time Cup drivers would visit the Busch Series from time to time to let the Busch drivers see if they had what it took to compete at the next level. Over the past couple years though it has grown to an eye shore, and it’s hurting the competition at the Busch level when seven out of the top ten in Busch points are so called Buschwhackers. Mind you in the good old days the top drivers would usually do it at the big payday races and walk away with the big bucks. Now they are trying to dominate Busch while trying to compete in Cup.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t think they should keep the Cup guys out of Busch races entirely, because I do believe that it is good for the regulars. However, I think they need to limit the amount of participation, and I think you will see it in the near future.

How are they hurting the sport?

Team owners usually run in the Busch series as a stepping stone to the big leagues. How are they to get equal sponsorship when they don’t have the dominate drivers and the Cup guys keep stealing the thunder and the money? Before you know it the small teams will be forced out and then they will have problems making full fields, or at least as competitive a field. (See Milwaukee Entry List, 41 entries.)

Yep, they help the sport by giving the Busch drivers a chance to run with the big boys, but then again if they are at that level then someone will notice and give them a chance in a Cup car. They also may bring a few extra people to the Busch races, but not a large amount. Most of the people who attend the Busch race go because they love racing, not because Harvick or Biffle are going to be there.

What is a fair number of Busch races for each Cup driver to run? Don’t know, that’s why they have people who are paid the big bucks to make decisions such as that. Just like they are starting to limit the number of teams an owner can have.

It’s coming, and it is just a matter of time.

And That’s the Way I See it!!

  1. Hey, I never received “my big bucks to make decisions such as that.” But I still made one.

It will solve itself as the CoT is phased in and one “minor tweak” of Cup testing rules.

Allow all testing, all the time with zero limits. Change that and Busch goes back to what it was, a few Cup drivers in each race that don’t require cross country flights.

  2. I’m not sure I see an open test schedule in the future. Mainly because it would kill the single car teams even more than they’re being killed now.

Although, I would be inclined to agree that the new testing regulations have a hand in the number of Cup drivers that have taken up a more “progressive” Busch schedule.

I touched on the subject after Jeff Burton won a few weeks back at Dover.

The situation is a tricky one, and one that I’m sure Nascar will not take lightly.
