Kyle Petty, along with his wife Patty, and several guest speakers will announce a sponsor backed promotion where if Kyle is voted into the Nextel All-Star race in two weeks at Charlotte’s Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Petty’s sponsors will contribute a minimum of $250,000 to the Victory Junction Gang. Also, any money earned through the race will also be donated, to include the coveted $1,000,000 prize for being first to the checkers.
While this is a good PR move, and the efforts of all involved are genuine, the strategy could use a little refinement. Ok, it could use a lot. With the current financial set-up of the campaign, according to the press release, Kyle has to be voted into the big show. Personally that throws up a red flag, here’s why.
In my opinion, it personally tells me that if I vote for Kyle and get his sponsors some air time, they will make a donation to Victory Junction. Ok so if Kyle isn’t voted in, then Victory Junction doesn’t get a dime? What’s up with that? It leaves one to assume that in order for the donation(s) to occur, Kyle has to get the air time and put the sponsors in front of the viewers.
It would seem that a more logical approach, and even better PR stunt, would be for the sponsors to donate “X” amount of money for each position above last place that Kyle finishes in the “Open”. Then, to further increase the donation(s), if Kyle races his way into or is voted in to the big show increase the amount donated for each position Kyle finishes above last place. Also, make a minimum amount for last place so that no matter what happens the kids that benefit from the Victory Junction aren’t left out in the cold.

[...] In follow-up to our article two week’s ago, “Vote Kyle, Reward Victory Junction Campaign Kicks Off Tomorrow“, Coca-Cola’s PR stunt worked. However, we’re still pretty ticked at the concept of it. In the end, we’re happy the kid’s didn’t lose out, but they easily could have. First and foremost, we love the Victory Junction Gang and the Petty’s. We have absolutely nothing but the highest respect for them and their accomplishments with the camp, and it’s an incredible ordeal. However, who we are ticked at is the sponsorship side of it, how they played the sympathy card and made an absolute mockery of the entire concept of voting in a driver to the All-Star race. [...]
