[thumb:357:l:s=1:l=x]Just now in an interview on SPEED (during Nascar Live), the question that has been on the minds of a lot of us was asked to Ward Burton. His reply was interesting, to say the least.
Ward was asked what his plans were for next year, and what they could entail. His reply was that while he’s talked with a few people, there isn’t anything concrete yet that would have him back in the Cup Series yet.
Officially Burton’s comment about his current situation was simply that he is talking with people.
I’d say I’m still looking.
Was Burton’s overall comment about the entire situation. However, what’s to say that it isn’t just something to say to the press while details are ironed out? Ward mentioned that he was glad to hear his name though, and that even when he was locked into a solid ride his name was coming up frequently.
The only thing to go by is the man’s word that he’s working on something, but nothing concrete. I, for one, believe him. Ward’s an honest and moral guy, and one of the Good Ol’ Boys that seem to be getting pushed out of the sport by the cocky kids today. Not that they aren’t (for the most part) really nice guys, but for some reason certain driver’s just give you that impression that creates a simple vision of yourself and the driver sitting on a front porch somewhere with a glass of iced tea, shooting the breeze about whatever was on your mind. I guess they have that relaxed, common man feel, although they happen to be fortunate to have one really cool job. A lot of today’s Young Guns are hyped into super-stardom in a way that almost gives them a feel that they are just slightly better than you. Not to say that they are (I can just see the emails on that one), but it’s the way they are sometimes portrayed by the media.
It’s unfortunate, as that’s one Nascar’s greatest appeals. The fact that although the job and paycheck is cool, at the end of the day we all like to sit on the porch with that glass of tea.

Yea, at the bottom line. Come on, really. What decent rides will be open this or next year? Almost none, and the clock is running on Ward. (spring chicken and all that)
He almost has to go with the #88 or the rumored third Waltrip Toyota ride. Or sit out another year.

Exactly. The whole time scheme seems to fit. Ward can run for a few more good years, but not many. There is also an option he could go back to BDR, since they too are scheduled to run 2 Camry’s next year. Or, I guess there’s the RedBull option. But, I don’t see how there isn’t a way he won’t be driving something next year. The talent pool is mighty thin.
